Gallery G2 was one of the first galleries I worked with after coming to Japan. Even after moving to Fukuoka and now, Osaka, its always a privilege to collaborate with this small but remarkably eclectic art venue. Not content to swim around in the local pool, G2 has, for the past few years, tested the waters at art fairs throughout the world - most recently the Affordable Art Fair in Milan and Brussels.
They've hit upon a rather cool way to show off all of their artists while also providing an incredible, unified experience. Each artist creates one or two (reasonably) monochromatic black & white pieces, each sized at a 12 x 12 cm square (that's roughly 5 x 5" for you imperial types). Displayed together, these small pieces merge myriad voices and styles into one large, abstract canvas. You can see a previous example below.
I created two new pieces exclusively for this exhibit, and I have to admit that it was a thrill rebounding off these particular boundaries.
I don't think I've worked in black & white since my student days. Its amazing how restrictions can fire your imagination. I was inspired. So inspired that these two pieces have the potential to generate a new series, based on the theme of Relics. I'll say more about these ideas when I post the new pieces. In the meantime, I'll just say that I'm really excited about this direction. While I'm sure to bring color into the mix, I'd like to play around a bit more in this monochromatic mud puddle.
