The Art of Paper @ Arts Rush Gallery Daikanyama
Happy New Year!
明けましておめでとうございます
I don’t know about you, but I wholeheartedly welcome 2023.
Last year, particularly the last part of last year, was weird for me. Distractingly weird. The kind of weird that kept me out of the studio and away from making art, showing art, talking about art, or even fiddling about on the computer in service to art. So basically, artless. What’s particularly strange is that I thought the year would go in the absolute opposite direction. Best laid plans, yes?
2023, therefore, presents itself as an opportunity to start over. For rebirth. A convenient marker along the path that allows for an adjusting of direction. Or in my case, a chance to hop back onto the path and get back to doing all the things I couldn’t get to last year.
2023 offers up a blank page
And what to do with a blank page? Cut it up of course!
I’m not alone in my paper-trimming endeavors this time. There are 6 of us, scattered throughout Japan, molding, folding, cutting and gluing our way to creative expression. There’s even some new work, fresh from my cutting hall. You can wrap yourself up in our work at Arts Rush Gallery in Daikanyama, Tokyo right now (continuing until January 30th).
I won’t be able to make the trip up to show you around, but the gallery owner, Suzuki-san (鈴木様), is a fantastic and fascinating guide. Say “Hi!” to her for me.
