The Words That Warp Reality • 音言霊 Exhibition @ Arts Rush Gallery, Daikanyama
Are you satisfied with reality? Your reality?
Do you wish for greener skies or pinker grass? More wings on people? Tiny horses who will collect your mail and hang your laundry out to dry?
Or perhaps the changes you wrought would be more subtle: more smiles, better relationships, more relaxing downtime, fewer awkward obligations.
But how to achieve these reality-altering affects? The fatalists will tell you that it cannot be done; reality is as it is, cast in iron and stone. Pragmatists would have you believe that hard work and dedication and planning are the tried and true paths to getting the world we want. Self-help authors will toss you writhing and screaming into a world of visualization; if you imagine your wants hard enough you can make them concrete.
But the linguist knows that only words (and perhaps cosmic radiation) can reprogram reality. Words have true might.
One word can sooth a beast or rend a friendship asunder. One sentence can change your future. One paragraph can shift the world’s axis. A treatise or chapter might send us all hurtling into the sun. A book, with all the right words in all the right places, can reshuffle the atoms and molecules of the universe itself.
And what could hold even more power than a word? Why, a picture of the idea of reality-warping words, of course!
Come to Tokyo, to Arts Rush Gallery between November 6th to 18th, 2024 and see 6 artists reshape reality and warp the infinite with their work.
*Incidentally, the word kotodama「言霊」roughly translates to “words that can re-shape reality”. So, context!
