Kaizuka may not be the biggest city (or suburb) in Japan…or even in the Osaka area (that honor goes to Osaka, naturally), but that doesn’t stop this town from being wonderfully active in culture and the arts.
There are always celebrations going on at the local park and beach - the fireworks are fabulous from our window. The Kaizuka Danjiri festival is a sight to behold. There are a whole bunch of funky cafes and venues popping up that celebrate the city and its craftspeople. We even have our own mascot, Tsuge-san(who you can see to the right).
Dearest to my heart though, is the Annual 市民文化祭 (Shimin Bunkasai/Citizen’s Cultural Festival). This will be the second time I’ve had the pleasure to join and hang my artwork alongside the paintings, calligraphy, and sculpture of the people who have shared their town with me.
This year’s Festival will host an art exhibition (of which I will have a tiny part), a project dedicated to scientist/astronomer/telescope maker Iwahashi Zenbei, tea ceremony, a Japanese confectionery making experience, and more. For the kids, there will be a picture book reading circle, snow globe making, and a ballpoint pen/herbarium project I’m really interested in seeing. It’s for 18 and under, so my daughter is my in. Speaking of whom, the last time she was at this festival was the last time I exhibited here, back in 2019 when she was 3. It’s gonna be a blast seeing how much her interests and reactions have changed.
Currently, the plan is for the family to hop over sometime on Sunday. If you’re in the area and you’d like to meet to see and chat about the art, drop me a line and we’ll set something up.
