Rapunzel Among the Minarets
Rapunzel Among the Minarets was created as a graduate school project, mostly over the course of two sleepless days, as a possible proposal for a children’s book project. The assignment was to present a familiar subject in an unexpected way, so Rapunzel combined the well-known fairy-tale with an admiration for the beauty of traditional Indian art, where the the brilliant colors and the interplay between 2 and 3-dimensional elements are so captivating.
This was a starting point for many of the techniques and idiosyncrasies that have come to be an intrinsic part of the art I make: the flowing curves of the hair; the tones under translucent paper to create shadows and shapes, the way my art interweaves dimensions and spacial planes. There's even a lot of washi paper used!
